Convenience and achievement don’t go together!!

Convenience and achievement don’t go together!!

I was stopped in the street this past week by someone who wanted to ask a few questions on fitness and in particular their own training/programming.  In conversation it appeared that this person needed a fair bit of advice/assistance and was in need of a training environment that was going to provide this.  This person was already a member of the local 24hr gym, the reasoning given for being a member at a 24hr facility was because it was convenient. Yes convenient.....

Convenience, what a convenient way to describe comfortable, mediocre, even limiting

Let me tell you convenience isn’t getting you anywhere when going to the gym. If you view it as a convenience your mindset is all wrong to start with. If you go to a gym as it is convenient but not supporting your needs it’s likely that it will also be convenient to turn up to the gym and walk on a treadmill whilst watching TV. How convenient is that.......exercise and the convenience of a TV, awesome now I don’t have to miss what’s going on on THE VOICE. This gym really must care for its members, 24hr access and TV’s, and on top of this all these machines that look awesome so they must make me awesome too right?? Or how convenient is it that I can turn up when no one else is there so I can get on any machine pump out 10 reps on each and get the greatest workout of all time, no one is there encouraging or helping me which is great cause when I train I am in the zone and I don’t need this.  Sometimes I may even break a sweat, but I normally don’t as the air conditioning keeps me cool.  How convenient is it that I hate squats and the gym has this awesome leg extension machine that really burns the quads, but I do not want to get too much of a workout as it is not convenient to be sore the next day after a workout.  When I am done at the gym too how convenient is it that there is a convenience store on the way home so I can drop in grab dinner or a snack!!!

OK I guess you get my point. Convenience and achievement do not go together. If convenience becomes a mindset and a reason you are going to a gym then I can conveniently say that your fitness goals aren’t going to be obtained. If this is the case then it is probably a convenience to stay in bed on a cold morning rather than getting up to train!!!

As you can see convenience may appear fantastic but it’s not taking you anywhere real quick, if anything it is holding you back. Let’s get unconventional people.
