Technology has had a wonderful impact on our lives............mainly. Not with food though!!!As technology in food increases it seems that the majority of the advances are bad for us and we are no longer eating real food, we mainly are eating food products these days. Identification of edible and healthy food has become hard, we are now faced with a bewildering amount of substances in foods that leave us scratching our heads saying is it good our bad for me?
So what should our food look like?
Firstly befre we answer the question, forget the conventional wisdoms. Forget the food pyramid, portion sizes, calories, blood types, the glycemic index. Forget Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, Biggest Loser etc. Forget it all.
The single most important thing we need to know about nutrition in our modern World is how to recognize the difference between food and food products. If we learn this our nutritional decision making process will be sound and healthy eating will be achieved.
As stated by Frank Forencich in the book " Exuberant Animal, The Power of Health, Play and Joyful Movement" the only real rule for healthy eating is; CHOOSE FOOD OVER FOOD PRODUCTS. AVOID FOOD PRODUCTS WERE POSSIBLE.
So back to the question, What does real food look like?
Real food is:
- grown
- messy
- variable quality
- goes bad fast
- requires preparation
- has vibrant colours
- has rich textures
- authentically flavourful
- has a strong connection to the land, seasons and culture.
What are FOOD PRODUCTS?
Food Products are:
- manufactured
- neat, convenient
- always the same
- keeps forever
- instant results
- dull, bland
- artifically flavoured
- has many advertisments on TV selling it (normally)
- no connection to the land, seasons or culture.
For healthy eating made easy, eat FOOD and not FOOD PRODUCTS.
